FBC Defenders (Frederick) Defeat OC Elite for third straight win in the Tom Dowd Memorial Tournament

Though they came out a little slow to start, the FBC Defenders (Frederick) picked up the pace as the game continued in their third match-up of the Tom Dowd Memorial Tournament.  Several turnovers, and a lack of foul calls, contributed to them being behind 12-16 after 6 minutes of play.  A steal and a basket by Shalette brought the Defenders ahead 17 to 15 and the team kept the momentum going after that spark.  Nay Nay grabbed a rebound after a missed foul shot and put it back up for 2!  Nina grabbed another rebound and put that back for 2 more.  Brittany had a steal and went coast to coast for 2, then grabbed a 2nd steal and scored 2 off of that as well.  All this in the closing minutes of the first half, with the Defenders leading by 28 to 16.

The Defenders came out a little flat at the start of the 2nd half, but picked it up again as Walker had a long pass ahead to Jackie who scored a basket.  The offense continued to be very balanced, with contributions from Aliyah, Nicole, Parris, and Karalyne to name a few.  They had a strong finish to close out the game 54 to 24.

High Scorer for the game was Shalette with 9.  Karalyne dominated the boards with 5 rebounds and Aliyah owned the paint with 2 blocked shocks.  In a true team effort, the assists were tied at 1 among 5 or so players.

FBC Defenders (Frederick) with 61 – 51 Exciting Win Again NJ Mavericks

FBC Defenders (Frederick) triumphed in an exciting game against the NJ Mavericks in their 2nd game of the Tom Dowd Tournament.  The Mavericks came out of the gate strong to take a 7 – 0 lead, in a game that would see several reversals.  We were down by 2 -12 when Walker hit a 3 to bring the score to 5-12.  That, coupled with a ratcheting up of defensive pressure, was the start of a huge turnaround for the team. The strong defense led to the offense firing up.   Jackie hit a foul shot with 13 seconds left in the half.  The team had an incredible 22 to 1 run finishing the half at 24 to 13.

The 2nd half opened with the Mavericks scoring 2, but Parris answered right away with a bucket.  Aliyah added with a jumper from the corner.  Still, the second half proved to be a nail-biter as the Mavericks chipped away at our lead, bringing the score to 29 to 27 with 9:22 left in the half.  We fought back, with offensive contributions coming from all around, including Parris, Nicole, Brittany, Walker, and Nay Nay(Janaysia) . The team got hot from the outside with 3 pointers raining in.  The team pulled together both offensively and defensively to secure a 61 to 51 win!

Shari was the high scorer with 18 points.  Aliyah had a strong performance on the boards, pulling down 6 rebunds.  Walker had 2 blocked shots.

FBC Defenders (Stone) Stumble in Rose Classic Playoffs

FBC Defenders (Stone) lost 35-70 today in the 1st round of the Rose Classic playoffs to Swagga Like Us. The game started off with Swagga sinking a 3-pointer, tying up a jump ball, and then hitting a 2-point shot to take a 5-0 lead. Janissa came back with a 3-pointer to bring the score up to 3-5, but after several aggressive steals by Swagga, the game started to get away from the Defenders. The 1st quarter ended with our team down 10 to 25. The 2nd quarter brought more impressive shooting from the other team, particularly from Swagga’s forward, who dominated the scoring. At the end of the half, the Defenders were trailing 15 to 36. There were some brief spurts of defense at points during the 2nd half, but it was not enough to hold off the onslaught from Swagga. The final score was a disappointing 35 to 70.

Walker was the Defender’s high scorer with 11. Jenean led with 7 rebounds, and Ashante had a high of 4 assists.
