FBC Defenders (Stone) Fall to the NJ Elite 21-31 in Fall Rose Classic

The first quarter of the game against NJ Elite was a low-scoring (4-8) ugly affair, which was unfortunately a sign of things to come.  No one’s game quite seemed “on” as we muddled through to the end of the 1st half, down by 9, with the score at 7 – 16.   The game was still within reach, and as one spectator observed in the stands: “…but for a few of our shots going in, we’d be good to go.”  The NJ Elite was pressing hard the whole game, and we weren’t handling it all that well.  We had way too many turnovers.  We were also hampered by our free throw shooting, which was just not up to our usual standards.

On the bright side,  Shalette had some key rebounds and drives, with a spin move thrown in.  Walker was able to corral an errant pass going out of bounds and knock it off an Elite player.  Tia had a short jumper for 2. Ashanti had several assists to Shalette, helping Shalette  rack up the game high 13 points.  Jenean got into the paint and got fouled, and Shari came up with a steal. The positive takeaway from the game was that we continued to play hard, especially in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter.  We will continue to work hard in practice on overcoming our deficits.

FBC Defenders (Stone) Beat St. Anthony’s 31-29 at Fall Rose Classic

FBC Defenders (Stone) looked a bit rusty as they eeked out a victory at 31-29 over St. Anthony’s (Long Island) in their first game in the Fall Rose Classic on September 18th.  St. Anthony’s took the ball at the opening tip down the court for a layup to start up by 2.  Walker had a steal and went coast to coast for a basket, tying the score at 2-2.  Some good defense by the Defenders forced a travel call on St. Athony’s.  Janissa hit for 3 to bring us to 5-4.  On an assist from Walker, Tia hit for 2 and 1!  Ashanti knocked down a 3 to bring us up to 11-8.  Aliyah got fouled in the post and hit both baskets.  We started to look a little anemic as we came to the end of the half.  St. Anthony’s took the lead by 1, with the score at 12-13.

The 2nd half got started with a 3 pointer by Walker to bring the score to 15-13.  St. Anthony’s came right back with a layup and the foul to go ahead 15-16.  Shalette then got a block and steal, and passed to Walker who hit a jumper.  The two teams stayed neck and neck throughout the 3rd quarter: 17 -17, then 19-19.  The play started to get very sloppy, with bodies flying around.  We ended the 3rd quarter down 19-23.   In the beginning of the 4th quarter, Tia grabbed an offensive rebound and had a putback for 2. Shalette dished off to Tia for another basket.  We continued to see a lot of sloppy passes.  Walker hit a 3 to put us ahead 26-25.  Walker then drove to the basket and got fouled.  The score was tied 27-27 with 3 minutes left.  Shalette went in for a layup, got fouled, and made 2 of 2.  We were now up 29-27 with 2 minutes left.  Jenean put up a shot from under the basket for 2.  Defenders up 31-27 with 38 seconds left.   We finished out the game with a 31-29 win.
