Strong Gym Rat Challenge Showing for 16U Coach Stone Despite Losses

Without one player over six feet tall.  With a roster of just six players, and one of them a soon to be sophomore, the Defenders 16U – Coach Stone managed to challenge and compete like true “Soldiers” at the Gym Rat Challenge this past weekend in Albany, NY.  All three games were decided in the final minutes, and were hotly contested battles.

The early game on Saturday showcased the Defenders vs. Westchester Hoopers.  The Defenders played the first half of the game with just five players, Alyssa McDonaugh, Jackie Rodriguez, Ashley Pina, Ariel Donza, and Kyra Fox before  Nicole Burns showed up to lend a hand during the start of the second half.  At Halftime, the Defenders defensive effort was evident on the scoreboard, with the score tied 27-27.  Eventually, the Hoopers would outlast the Defenders by pulling away in the final five minutes to win 44-37.  Alyssa McDonaugh led all Defenders with 14 points, and eight rebounds, while Ashley Pina scored 12 points, with five rebounds.

The later game on Saturday saw Jamestown Elite match their taller, 13 player roster against the smaller, but feisty Defenders.   The Defenders refused to hang their heads, or give in to thoughts of defeat simply because they were outnumbered, and outsized.  After trailing 31-19 at the half, the Defenders went on a 13 – 4 run, sparked by heads up defensive play from Nicole Burns, and the scorching hot shooting of Jackie Rodriguez who finished with 17 points, and Alyssa McDonaugh who led all Defenders, finished with 18 points.  In the final moments of play  Jamestown Elite’s size and depth began to weigh heavy on the Defenders who fell to Jamestown Elite 58-42.

The final game of Gym Rat Challenge showcased the Defenders against Next Level.  Coffee clutching parents, and onlookers cheered, to encourage their team to summon the energy for an early Sunday morning win.  As the first half of play was winding down, with Next Level leading 21-18, one of the referees made a controversial call, blowing his whistle to stop play in the middle of a Defenders fast break, for an injured Next Level player who was suffering from a nose bleed due to an accidental “run in” with an elbow.  What made the call difficult to understand, is the injured player was behind the play, and still under the other basket, and the Defenders were just a few feet away from the basket.  Coach Stone wasn’t the only one miffed by the call, and the timing of the whistle as many of the onlookers shook their heads in either shock or amazement.  The second half of play saw several lead changes, and tied scores, before Ashley Pina, and Alyssa McDonaugh fouled out leaving just four Defenders on the floor to finish the game from the 1:34 mark.  The Defenders continued to show heart, and exude determination, as Jackie Rodriguez drained a crucial 3 pointer with four seconds left to play that put the Defenders on the verge of securing their first victory at the Challenge.  History would prove to have other plans for the Defenders’ hopes, as the Next Level team was able to knock down a desperation 3 pointer at the end of regulation with no time left on the clock that sealed the victory, and confirmed defeat for the Defenders 45-44.  Alyssa McDonaugh finished with 13 points, and eight rebounds, Jackie Rodriguez scored 13 points, and six rebounds, and Ashley Pina rounded out the most productive Defenders with 8 points, and six rebounds.

The entire Defenders organization should be very proud of how Coach Stone’s 16U team represented hard work, dedication, and perserverance during the Gym Rat Challenge.  One can only wonder how different things would’ve turned out for the Defenders if they were able to travel, and play with their full roster of players.

Defenders 13U Team Gets the Message and Wins Two at Tom Dowd Memorial

No one outside the team knows what words of wisdom Coach Stone imparted to the players after the 13U Team (Brown) loss last week, but the crowd began to see a glimpse of what could be at the Tom Dowd Memorial on 05/26/12. It was evident there had been a lot of introspection before the team travelled north to play three games in Woodbury, NY. Having Coach Stone at the helm again today would prove inspiring in more ways than one. This tournament is something personal.

In game one against the Lady Minutemen, we saw a Defenders team that hustled and was stronger on defense. Alex started off with two foul shots and Aahmira scored a foul shot after being fouled on a strong move to the basket. She also forced a three second call and scored on a breakaway layup, then forced a turnover. Shauna rejected a shot, then scored following nice team passing. The team forced the opponent to make turnovers. Brianna scored twice and Imani showed she could play could defense well. Imani also scored after being fouled and Aahmira’s good eye for what was happening, prevented a layup. Aahmira scored a technical foul shot and Brianna scored a three-pointer, a sign of things to come. Gabrielle once again showed how aggressive she can be on defense, forcing the travel and, in a later play, showing her strong defensive stance. Briana showed she could make an impact defensively as well.

Ahmira forced another turnover and made the layup. Gabrielle joined the three-point shot club. Alex changed up to score off the drive inside. Brianna scored foul shots and Imani forced the backcourt call in addition to making two layups. Savannah denied the layup and Shaunna made a nice assist to Aahmira for the score. Brianna and Alex scored three pointers in the second half and Briana, Imani, Aahmira and Gabrielle showed they can play team defense. Final Score: Lady Minutemen 53-41

In game two, the 13U team showed more of their offensive ability. Aahmira started off with two layup scores. Gabrielle made the assist leading to Brianna’s score, scored herself with the jump shot, then made two foul shots after another play. Imani and Savannah forced turnovers, playing aggressively and not letting the opponent move forward easily. Shaunna and Jewel scored off the offensive rebounds and Brianna hit the long jumper. Brianna and Alex scored off offensive rebounds while Savannah, Imani and Gabrielle made steals. Jewel and Imani scored off rebounds. Briana and Jewel showed they could hustle defensively and Alex continued to be successful with the three-pointers. Final Score: Defenders 47-10

By the third game, members of the crowd wondered if it were possible to see a happy or smiling Coach Stone. The girls had played very well against a stronger team, but lost in game one and had won, but not played up to his expectations in game two.

In a very close final game, Brianna and Aahmira were able to score on layups. Jewel scored after a steal under the offensive board. Briana made another steal for the team. Alex made two outside shots and Gabrielle made the assist to Savannah who scored. Gabrielle batted away a shot leading to a score by Imani. There was good pressing by the Defender guards. The team ended the half down by one. In the second half, Gabrielle scored on the jumper and Imani made the assist to Shaunna who scored. Savannah made a few more jumpers, Shaunna showed she is getting stronger at blocking shots. A more aggressive defense by the entire team and baskets by Gabrielle, Alex and Brianna helped the defenders make a comeback, but with less than a minute left, the Defenders again were down. To the surprise of everyone in the gym, Brianna made the three-point shot for the Defender win. And, yes, the crowd did see a smile on the face of Coach Stone. Just don’t tell anyone. Final Score: Defenders 39-38

Lessons learned today: Play your best and play consistently, no matter who you have as an opponent. Switch to defense mode immediately after scoring. Talk to each other more. Make straight, strong passes. Very special thanks and congratulations to Savannah and Briana for everything they did today!

Defenders 13U Team Loses to Brooklyn Saints – Where is the Fire?

On 05/19/12, the 13U Defenders (Brown) suffered a character-building loss to the Brooklyn Saints 7th-8th grade girls team, a team that was faster, bigger underneath and stronger on the boards. In the first quarter, the Saints scored early. Defenders Shaunna was fouled on a rebound and made one foul shot. Jada made a steal and scored the layup, then did the same thing again.. Shaunna scored with a strong move underneath. Imani did a good job pressing the opposing guards, but the Saints were ahead 24-8 at the half. Alex had two steals in the third quarter and Jewel forced a three-second call. Unfortunately, the Saints were faster on the breaks and were able to make layups easily. Myasia scored for the Defenders with a layup near the end of the game and Shaunna scored off the short jumper. Final score Saints 39-12

Lessons learned from this game: Have someone stay back to prevent the fast break. There is no jogging in basketball. Follow your shot. Ask yourself: Is there a fire in my belly?
