Defenders Soldiers fall to Harlem Wizards in a highly Entertaining event!

Swoop (Harlem Wizards 2012)It was a moderately warm Saturday evening on August 18th when the Harlem Wizards came to town to take on the FBC Soldiers in a much anticipated night of competition, entertainment and fundraising. The Wizards were lead by Dwayne “Swoop” Simpson a former basketball stand out at St Peter the Apostle High in New Brunswick, NJ and five other extremely talented players who brought the audience to it’s feet with trick shots, long range bombs, and thunderous dunks! The Wizards engaged members of the audience with such favorites as the “old” popcorn shower, hidden ball, and razzle dazzle circular ball passing tricks along with many other fan favorites. They even got a couple from the audience to dance a jig at half court while Swoop engaged them in a romantic trip down memory lane! Oh yeah and there was actually a competitive basketball game going on in the midst of all this entertainment. The FBC Defenders fielded a team comprised of Alumnae (Chevanie Smith, Danielle Brown, Jacinda Dunbar, Alexis Scott, Jaymee Tucker, Candace Vigo, Christina White, Shalette Brown, Marisa McCabe, Taryanna Kelly, Nina Scott, Jasmine Walker) and Family (Dion Rogers, Iverson Fleming, Curtis Frederick, Stanley Price). The Soldiers put on quite the entertaining show themselves as they bombed long range shots, split double teams, initiated no look passes, and several alley oops! The coaches for the Soldiers try strategic game plans, creative play call, bribes for the officials, and when all else failed … holding wizards players whenever they took the ball out of bounds but nothing seemed to work! The Soldiers eventually fell to the Wizards in the 4th quarter as their size and athleticism was just too much for the team to overcome! Final Score: Harlem Wizards “A Lot” and FBC Soldiers “Not Quite Enough”.

Thrill of Victory & Agony of Defeat for Defenders at West 4th St. This Weekend

The thrilling victory came on Saturday morning when the FBC Defenders – Coach Stone 16u faced off against Baseline. Defenders used a 12-0 start to pace themselves behind balanced scoring from Shalette Brown, (team high 14), & Alyssa McDonaugh who finished with 11 points. Baseline clawed their way back by halftime, and only trailed by 3, 26 -23. And then Jasmine Walker arrived..! Walker went to work immediately penetrating, passing & scoring from all over the court, while pressuring the guards to create turnovers. Despite a 4th quarter surge from Baseline, the Defenders held on to win with a final score of 57-49.

The agonizing defeat came on Sunday morning when the Defenders fell to Frederick Douglas in overtime.  On this day, it was the Defenders who needed to rebound from a slow start, due to unforced turnovers, and loose defense in the first half of play.  At halftime, the Defenders trailed Frederick Douglas 39-25, and  were blessed with a scathing rebuke from Coach Stone, that seemed to awaken the fighter instinct that was missing in the first half.  The Defenders responded led by the reliable shooting of senior Jasmine Walker (game high – 22points), & Alyssa McDonaugh (11points).  With 5 minutes remaining in the game the Defenders trailed 53-46, and were finally able to communicate on defense, to create stops, and rewarded themselves with easy fast break baskets.  With  1 minute remaining in the contest, and the score tied at 60, both teams treated the crowd gathered along the 20 feet high fence to several electrifying trips up & down the court, that failed to put points on the board.   The 3 minute overtime did not provide many scoring highlights, but did provide a dazzling display of defense at both ends of the court, and Frederick Douglas was able to outlast the Defenders for a 63-62 victory.  The Defenders left the famed basketball court, battle tested, but ready for more battles in the upcoming Championship rounds beginning on Wednesday, August 15th.  Stay tuned for more hoops and heroics, because these ladies are not backing down from any challenges..!

Defenders (Coach Stone 16U) Turn Up The Heat at West 4th St.

On a hot August morning, with temp hovering in the mid 90’s, The Defenders decided to turn up the heat on the scorching hot blacktop at the famed West 4th Street cage in NYC.  Defenders used the strength and the experience of seniors, Taryana Kelly, Jasmine Walker, Shalette Brown, LaRhonda Womack & Marissa McCabe to dominate the XMEN of NYC, from the opening tip, and never looked back.  Sharp perimeter shooting from Jasmine Walker, Alyssa McDonough & Nicole Burns helped to space the floor and create passing lanes.

On defense, the active hands, and amazing footwork of Alyssa McDonough, and Shalette Brown created steals & blocks and helped the Defenders build a 25 point lead by the half.  demonstrative blocks from Shalette Brown kept the XMEN at bay before a red-eyed audience of basketball enthusiasts..

Defenders – Coach Stone 16U Reign Supreme at Battle of Baltimore

The Defenders played 5 games in three days and emerged victorious, with a first place finish, and an overall record of 4-1. Here’s the individual game breakdowns of what you missed by not being there.

Defenders vs. Blue Thunder of Pennsylvania

Shalette Brown, and Marisa McCabe provided leadership, and experience for the Defenders in their first contest of the tournament against Blue Thunder, with solid efforts at both end of the court scoring 14 & 10 points respectively. The Defenders used a suffocating defensive presence led by Kyra Fox & Luv Hooks in the second half, and sharp perimeter shooting from Junior guards Jackie Rodriguez, who connected on three 3 pointers on her way to 13 points, Ashley Pina who scored 9 points, and rising senior Alyssa McDonough who managed 8 points. Defenders 55, Blue Thunder 38.

Defenders vs. Crystal City Stars

In their second contest of the tournament, The Defenders squared off against a team that boasted taller players at every position. Both teams started off slow.., real slow. Both coaches folded their arms, and unfolded their arms repeatedly, and shook their heads in frustration as they watched their teams play the first 7 minutes, with only scoring a whopping total of six points. Defenders led 4-2. By halftime both teams began to find their legs, and the ability to score, and Crystal City led 18-15. At one point in the second half the Defenders trailed by 10 points, and seemed on the verge of suffering a lopsided defeat, when suddenly.. Jackie Rodriguez hit her second 3 pointer of the second half bringing the Defenders within 7 points. Marissa McCabe, Nicole Burns, Luv Hooks, and Shalette Brown provided timely baskets that pulled the Defenders to within 2 points in the waning moments of regulation. And then the real contest began!
Trailing 50-47 with 1.7 seconds remaining, Jackie Rodriguez was fouled attempting a three pointer that would’ve forced overtime, and went to the free throw line with .03 seconds to shoot 3 free throws, and force overtime. After making the first two free throws, Crystal City’s coach tried calling a timeout to give Jackie Rodriguez some time to think about the last free throw. After the timeout, Rodriguez hit the last free throw to force overtime.

More heroics ensued in the overtime period, but the Defenders eventually succumbed to Crystal City Stars, 58-55. Rodriguez finished with 15 points, Luv Hooks scored 9, and Shalette Brown scored 8 points. Stay tuned for more lady basketball excitement with more game summaries to come..
