Coach: Dave Kosa (2nd season at Piscataway, 22-5; 12th overall, 182-92)

Conference: Greater Middlesex Conference, Red Division

Last year: 22-5. The Chiefs caught fire in mid-January and won 16 of their last 18 contests. Along the way, Piscataway edged Monroe, 77-74, in overtime to claim a third straight GMC Tournament title. It stormed through Bridgewater-Raritan, Bayonne and Phillipsburg to reach the North 2, Group 4 final, bowing to eventual state champion Franklin, 79-43.

Top returning players: Kendrea Williams (Sr. G 5-9) Nadia Wooten (Sr. G 5-9); Aubri McKoy (Sr. G 5-9); Alliera McCoy (Sr. F 5-9); LaNiya Miller (So. F 5-10); Deonna Henry (Jr. G 5-4)

Key newcomers: Aahmira Brown (Sr. G 5-5); Myasia Taylor (Sr. G 5-5); LeAsiah Manning (Sr. C 5-10); Taylor Young (Sr. F 5-7); Toni Modeste (Jr. F 5-9); Brooke Moll (So. F 5-8).

College commitments: Nadia Wooten (American International).

Outlook: The Chiefs feature a solid nucleus to build upon in returning starters Kendrea Williams, Nadia Wooten and Alliera McKoy. Although they may be a bit undersized relative to recent years, this group will work as a committee on the glass and cause some chaos with full-court pressure.

Extending its defense gives Piscataway the best chance to maximize its speed in transition but can do just as much offensive damage in the halfcourt. Establishing its desired tempo will be at the forefront of every game plan.

Player to watch: Kendrea Williams. Give her space to respect her penetration and Williams will show her range (47 3-pointers) as she did against Monroe in the GMC final when she buried six treys and erupted for a season-high 30 points to earn tournament MVP. When she lures defenders to cheat up on her along the arc, it’s a set up to blow by off the wing and attack the hoop. Her shrewd sense of what an instance demands is the primary reason she has already eclipsed the 1,000-point mark.
