Brown Unstoppable in 78-64 Win over Eagles

Next Game: at Manhattanville College  2/10/2016 – 6:00 PM

MADISON, N.J. – Senior forward Shalette Brown‘s career day led the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women’s basketball team to its sixth consecutive win, as they beat the Eastern University Eagles by a score of 78-64 on Saturday afternoon.  Brown scored a career-best 31 points to go along with 10 rebounds, marking her 17th double-double of the season. The team also shot a season-high 56.9 percent from the field for the game and 67 percent from the field in the second half.

Turnovers kept the game close in the first half, but the Devils (16-5, 8-2 MAC Freedom) outscored the Eagles (10-11, 4-6 MAC Freedom) 26-15 in third quarter, cementing the victory. Early in the game, the Devils relied on defense to build their lead. Even with their own three-minute field goal drought, the Devils held Eastern to 20 percent shooting in the first half. Junior guard Alyssa McDonough ended the scoreless spurt to put FDU-Florham up by six.

Junior forward Emily Lavin and senior forward Tori Grossi combined for 18 of the Eagles’ 22 first half points. Both teams came out firing in the second half. In the early part of the third quarter, both teams shot well over 50 percent from the field, but a 7-0 run by the Devils and a three-and-a-half minute field goal drought for Eastern saw FDU-Florham’s lead balloon to 20.

McDonough’s 13 point and  eight assist performance gave the Devils a perimeter presence, but it was Brown who carried FDU-Florham throughout, scoring 21 of her 31 points in the second half. Eastern cut into the lead late, but Lavin’s 19 points and 11 rebounds was not enough to push the Eagles any closer than 14 points late. Brown secured her double-double with a rebound with 56 seconds left, making it her sixth straight game with double digit points and rebounds.

On Wednesday, the Devils will head to Purchase, N.Y. to take on Manhattanville College in search of their eighth straight victory.
